The
following was published in the
Colorado Springs newspaper, The Gazette, in July 2007:
Founded
in 1975 by a group of enthusiastic RVers and named after the
famous Kissing Camels red rocks at the Garden of the Gods,
these local RVers continue to gather monthly throughout the
year for campouts, fellowship and lots of fun.
The Kissing Camels Chapter
is affiliated with the national organization called The Good
Sam Club and one of several chapters in the Colorado Springs
area. Members come from a variety of backgrounds and share
their life experiences in a friendly social setting. Chapter
membership is open to people of all ages. Some current
members are charter members and have enjoyed being a Kissing
Camels for over thirty years.
The Kissing Camels camping
season begins in April or May and ends in September or
October with one campout per month. Camp outs are held on
the third weekend of the month at campgrounds within 100
miles of Colorado Springs. Most are at campgrounds with hook
ups (water electricity, sewer) but occasionally the club dry
camps (without hook ups)
Activities at campouts
include a variety of indoor and outdoor games, pot luck
meals, pancake breakfasts, crafts and extensive periods of
gab.
The Kissing Camels Sams is
not limited to the camping season but functions year round.
In non camping months there are luncheon meetings at local
restaurants and a Christmas party. In addition there are
monthly breakfasts at TREA (The Reserve Enlisted
Association) facility. The breakfasts are a social
gathering. For those that like SOS this is a real
opportunity. The chapter also engages in numerous charitable
activities.
Many folks with RVs are Good
Sam members but are not aware of the local chapters or what
they are all about. Even if you are not a member of Good
Sams it is simple to join and the membership is very
reasonable In addition to the ability to join the local
chapters there are many benefits including discounts at
hundreds of Good Sam RV Parks, news letters with useful
information to Rvers to mention a few.
If you have a recreational
vehicle and the Kissing Camels Sams sounds like a group you
might be interested in visiting, please give the current
president, Bob Mitchell, a call at 535-8932 or Dick Mitchell
at 598-7998. We would love to have you visit and new members
are welcomed. |
